Center Overview

American Health Research is a private research center owned and operated by Dr. Selwyn Spangenthal. Dr. Spangenthal has been actively involved in research since 1987. In 2000 he began a private practice, Charlotte Lung and Health. The research department of Charlotte Lung and Health continued to conduct research until 2004 when American Health Research was established.

American Health Research conducts Phase II-IV clinical trials and employs 12 full time clinical research coordinators, highly experienced with serial assessments. Our site also employs a full time Data Entry Coordinator, to ensure that data entry timelines are adhered to as well as a full time Regulatory Specialist to guarantee proper submission of IRB documentation and maintenance of regulatory documents. A full time Marketing Coordinator assists with recruitment of trials through various inventive routes. Through collaborative teamwork and cohesion, American Health Research offers top quality performance and implementation of study protocols.

Investigator Experience

Dr. Selwyn Spangenthal, MD
Dr. Selwyn Spangenthal is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology and is a Certified Physician Investigator through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP). He studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and attained MRCP (Member of the Royal College of Physicians) in London, United Kingdom. His Pulmonary fellowship was done at Tufts New England Medical Center, 1980-1982. Dr. Spangenthal has been the Principal Investigator on numerous Clinical Research studies since 1987. A great number of these drugs are now FDA approved and readily available for patient care worldwide. Dr. Spangenthal is the leading physician at American Health Research, with over 20 years of research experience.

Christine Schmidlin, PA-C
Christine joined Charlotte Lung and Health and American Health Research in March 2011. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with a minor in Genetics from North Carolina State University. She received her Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Wingate University in 2010.

Kathryn Jones, ACNP - BC
Kathryn joined Charlotte Lung and Health and American Health Research in July 2012. She received her Associate’s degree in nursing from Central Piedmont Community College and her BSN and Master’s degree in Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her Post Master’s Certification as Acute Care Nurse Practitioner was received at the University of South Carolina Columbia. Kathryn has been a State Representative for the Academy of Nurse Practitioners for 4 years and the President of Metrolina Coalition of Nurse Practitioners for 10 years.

Claudia joined American Health Research in February 2004 and has been experienced in research since 2002. Claudia received her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Monmouth University.

Alison joined American Health Research in March 2008 and has been experienced in research since 2001. Alison received her Bachelor of Science from Appalachian State University.

Laurie Thomason, RN, BSN, CCRC
Certified Clinical Research Coordinator
Laurie joined American Health Research in October 2003. She is a pulmonary nurse and has more than 17 years of pulmonary medicine experience. Laurie received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Nancy joined American Health Research in March 2006 and has been experienced in the administrative aspect of health care since 1993.

Gwyn joined American Health Research in April 2012. She received her Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Certified Nursing Assistant degree from Watts School of Nursing.

Ana joined American Health Research in May 2012 and has been experienced in research since 2006. She received certification as both Lab Technician and ECG Technician at Miami Dade Community College and Professional Training Center.

Clinical Research Coordinator
Lindsey joined American Health Research in April 2012. She received her Bachelor of Science in Clinical Research with a minor in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and she completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program from Cabarrus College of Health Science.

Kabao joined American Health Research in June 2012 and has been experienced in research since 2010. She received her Bachelor of Science in Clinical Research from Campbell University.

Mary joined American Health Research in July 2012 and has been experienced in research since 2010. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Christopher Thompson, RCP
Respiratory Care Practitioner
Chris joined American Health Research in June 2007. He has 21 years of experience in Pulmonary Function Testing and Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing. Chris started his course work at the University of Miami in 1989, and completed his Respiratory Therapist Degree with ATI College of Health in 1991. He is also the creator of "CPET BUDDY", a stress test assistance software.

Patient Demographics

American Health Research draws patients from an extensive research database as well as Dr. Spangenthal's well established private practice, Charlotte Lung and Health. In a diverse metropolitan area such as Charlotte, this gives us the ability to include people from many different backgrounds. We are also given regular referrals from Investigators at our sister site, Clinical Research of Rock Hill, in nearby Rock Hill, South Carolina.
