Central Baptist Hospital is a 383-bed major medical research and education center committed to providing excellent health care, leading-edge technology and compassionate medical services to patients throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky.

The hospital has conducted research for many years, formalizing its efforts with the establishment of the Clinical Research Center in 1999. The center is committed to advancing the practice of medicine and improving patient care by performing and fostering clinical trials for its patients.

The Clinical Research Center is involved in all aspects of clinical trials and has trained research coordinators who organize, facilitate and coordinate trials. More than 40 physicians currently serve as investigators or co-investigators on research projects at Central Baptist Hospital. The hospital has its own IRB that reviews each study coordinated by the Clinical Research Center to ensure patient safety.

Central Baptist Hospital has over 20 years of experience conducting clinical trials. Since the establishment of the Clinical Research Center in 1999, the CBH CRC has conducted several 100 trials across a wide range of therapeutic areas, including, but not limited to:

Facility Description

Central Baptist Hospital is a 383-bed major medical research and education center committed to providing excellent health care, leading-edge technology and compassionate medical services to patients throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky.

Located in Lexington, Kentucky, Central Baptist Hospital serves a population of approximately 1.5 million people. It is owned by Baptist HealthCare System, which owns or manages six hospitals throughout the state of Kentucky. Central Baptist manages Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center in Richmond, Kentucky, a 105-bed hospital serving the healthcare needs of Madison County and surrounding areas. Central Baptist Hospital began operation in 1954 and has grown to be one of the major tertiary centers in the state.

Today, Central Baptist has one of the busiest and most respected heart programs in Kentucky. Central Baptist performs more than 15,000 heart catheterizations and more than 400 open heart procedures a year. The Cancer Care Center offers a full range of services, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, genetic counseling and clinical trials. More than 1,600 new cancer cases are diagnosed each year. The obstetrics program delivers some 4,000 babies a year.

To deliver quality care Central Baptist Hospital relies on an increasing array of technology to improve patient care, diagnose diseases, and improve efficiency. The CBH Clinical Research Center is maintained by a staff comprised of 10 Clinical Research Coordinators, two Regulatory Coordinators, Oncology Data Coordinator, Research Business Manager, and Internal Compliance Monitor. The majority of our staff has been with the CRC for over 2 years, with over 50 years of collective clinical research experience.

Patient Demographics

Central Baptist Hospital pulls 75% of it patient population from a primary service area comprised of 17 counties known as the Bluegrass Area Development District, with a total 2010 population of 767,265. The 2000 population of this area was 687,180, which is more than an eleven percent increase. The population is projected to increase 4.6 percent by 2015 to 802,233. Central Baptist Hospital also receives an additional 25% of its patients from Southeastern Kentucky.

Education

Central Baptist Hospital primary service area’s population is highly educated with 27.7 percent of the population holding a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. This is higher than the national average. Eighty four percent of the population has a high school education or greater.

Patient Services

Central Baptist Hospital’s patient contact in 2009 consisted of over 18,000 inpatient admissions, 33,559 emergency room visits, and a total of 111,030 outpatient visits. Central Baptist Hospital delivered 3,671 babies and performed 471 open heart procedures in 2009.

Central Baptist Hospital Clinical Research Center (CBH-CRC) has two divisions, the majority of the research disciplines are managed by Laura Martin, RN, CCRA in the Clinical Research Center. In 2008 the Cancer Research Program was relocated to the Central Baptist Hospital Cancer Care Center and is managed by Micheal F. Stephens, BA, CCRA. Both areas utilize the Research Business Office that is located in the Clinical Research Center.
