Research Center Profile:
Northwest Behavioral Research Center
At Northwest Behavioral Research Center (NBRC), we believe that
the most effective and reliable psychopharmacology research is
conducted in real clinical settings by practicing psychiatrists
with extensive clinical trial expertise. We are an independent
research center, associated with a prominent psychiatric clinical
practice, providing the highest quality clinical research care,
protocol compliance, and study recruitment in the metro Atlanta
area. Our priority is maintaining strict adherence to the FDA Code
of Federal Regulations and ICH Guidelines for Good Clinical
Practice to assure that patient's rights as research subjects
are protected and that submitted data to sponsors is of the highest
quality.
Dr. Banov has 2 research offices in northern suburbs of Atlanta.
One office is located in Marietta, GA (northwest of Atlanta) and
the other is located in Roswell, GA (north of Atlanta).
Our full-time research staff includes certified clinical
research coordinators with many years of experience in mental
health as well as other areas of medicine. They regularly attend
continuing education on conducting clinical research studies, GCP
guidelines, and mental health updates.
Our center has worked with most of the major central nervous
system pharmaceutical companies and contract research
organizations. We have participated in Phase II-IV studies in a
number of CNS-related therapeutic areas. As an independent site, we
are able to work with Central Institutional Review Boards.
We are affiliated with Northwest Behavioral Medicine (NBM), one
of the largest behavioral health care group practices in Georgia
with over 7500 patients. Our psychiatrists are board certified in
child, adolescent, addiction, and adult psychiatry and are a major
psychopharmacological referral center for physicians and mental
health care providers. NBM is well known in the community for
providing comprehensive therapies across a number of areas
including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia,
trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, and
attention deficit disorder.
Compassionate
We take pride in our high standard of care. We also pay particular
attention to the care of our patients and their rights as study
subjects. Many of the patients who complete our programs continue
in our care for management of their condition. The sponsors of our
studies consistently give high marks to our investigators, research
coordinators, staff, and facility for the care we provide, customer
service to patients and sponsors, and quality of our work.
Facility Description
Both locations are freestanding facilities. The research center is
in the same location as the clinical practice. Both locations have
high-speed internet access and wireless internet access. Both
facilities have calibrated minus 20 degrees Celsius freezers, ECG
machines, double-locked drug areas, and trained staff performing
phlebotomy tasks. Both facilities are approximately 30 miles from
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Both locations are within
a 2-mile radius of a hospital.
Clinical Research Experience Our medical director, Dr. Michael
Banov, is board-certified in adolescent, addiction, and adult
psychiatry and is a board certified clinical investigator. He has
been involved in clinical drug trial research since his psychiatry
training back in 1990 at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical
School.
Dr. Michael Banov has been a principal
investigator in over 50 clinical trials. He has published many
articles and presented at multiple conventions, meetings, and
functions. His full curriculum vitae is available online at
www.psychatlanta.com.
Cathie Calhoun, APRN, B.C. achieved her Master
of Science in Psychiatric Nursing in 1990. She has served as a BSN
since 1984 in psychiatry. She currently is a Clinical Nurse
Specialist for Northwest Behavioral Medicine and Research Center.
She has served as a sub-investigator on approximately 30 clinical
trials.
Staff Expertise
The combined experience of NBRC's 4 research coordinators is
over 50 years. Three of them are certified through ACRP and one is
eligible. 3 of the 4 study coordinators have a bachelor%92s degree
in various health related fields. Experience in pharmacological
clinical trials lays in psychiatry (including depression, bipolar
disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), sleep disorders,
addiction, musculoskeletal disorders, pain, allergy, asthma,
diabetes, hypertension, and gastrointestinal disorders.
All study coordinators have computer skills and extensive remote
data capture experience. They also have extensive regulatory and
quality assurance experience. All of the study coordinators perform
phlebotomy and ECG procedures.
Patient Demographics Atlanta and all it's Northern Suburbs
are densely populated. Atlanta is one of the 10 most populated
metropolitan areas in the United States. Being a part of a vast
metropolitan area has its advantages to reaching a racially diverse
patient population. We reach potential study subjects through our
clinical database, advertising on TV, radio, and in print.
- We can utilize Central IRBs for all studies.
- Study Coordinators are IATA certified.
- Equipped for rapid startups
- Multiple affiliations with major hospitals
- Consistently meet or exceed enrollment goals.
- Dr. Banov himself performs most rating scales.
Dr. Banov is interested in also conducting
trials in obesity/bariatric medicine and sexual dysfunction.
