Center Overview

Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS), a 1,110-bed network, is a non-profit teaching and research medical center. GHS is one of South Carolina’s largest and most-respected health care providers. Comprised of more than 1000 physicians on medical staff, 150 residents and 7500 healthcare professionals on five medical campuses, GHS offers an unexcelled richness and depth of resources to the more than one million people that it serves. GHS has an affiliation with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and is a founding partner in Health Sciences South Carolina, a research collaborative of the State’s largest hospitals and medical schools.

Located just off of Interstate 85 between Atlanta and Charlotte, and 20 minutes away from Greenville Spartanburg International Airport, GHS fosters an all-inclusive cooperative effort to translate research and clinical insights into practical advances that enhance and prolong life. To that end, the Health Sciences Research, Education and Innovation Institute, a 100,000 square foot facility located on a 22-acre portion of the Greenville Memorial Medical Campus is now under construction.

Clinical Research Experience

GHS has been active in clinical research for more than 15 years, including phase I, II, III, and IV research studies and clinical trials in medical and surgical specialties. We have a dedicated Office of Research Compliance and Administration that oversees more than 500 clinical trials annually. GHS has three Institutional Review Boards, with each board meeting monthly to comply with growing research needs.

The Clinical Cardiology Research Program was created in 2005 to complement the University Medical Center, Health Sciences South Carolina Collaborative and the 28 board certified cardiologists committed to advancing clinical research at GHS. Our goal is to bring new medical breakthroughs in cardiovascular medicine and device technology to our patients.

Facility Description

The Clinical Cardiology Research Program is located in the Heart Institute at Greenville Memorial Hospital, the 710-bed flagship hospital of GHS. Affiliated cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons provide the vast majority of cardiac care with responsibility for the following visits and/or procedures performed annually.
