MPC's active clinical and pre-clinical research program is headed up by Ricardo Vallejo and Ramsin Benyamin. Drs. Benyamin and Vallejo are among the first pain physicians certified by the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP) and Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP). They are invited speakers, board examiners for pain and they serve as faculty for local universities (University of Illinois and Illinois State University). They are members of several national and international pain societies and are also members of the editorial board of multiple peer reviewed pain journals.

Millennium Pain Center has compassionately pursued the creation of a "Pain Center of Excellence" by implementing the most advanced pain management techniques, along with involvement in educational programs all around the globe, and engaging in an extensive research and publication program. The Millennium Pain Center was established with the mission to improve the quality of lives of individuals with chronic and cancer pain utilizing compassion and advanced interventional pain management techniques.

Millennium Pain Center offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating pain. This approach translates into individually designed treatment programs that best suit patients' needs. In summary, we proudly identify our centers as the "Leaders in Pain Control, Research and Education".

Clinical Research Experience

Our center has been involved in clinical research for 13 years. We are currently involved in clinical trials with both device and pharmaceutical companies and are interested in CRO collaboration.

Our center is well qualified for the following therapeutic areas:

  • Low Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Neuropathic Pain Conditions
  • Postherpetic Neuralgia

The Millennium Pain Center promotes an active and productive research program, encompassing both pre-clinical and clinical investigations. MPC physicians are strongly encouraged, capably-guided, and financially supported in their pursuit of quality clinical and basic science research.

Pre-Clinical Research:
The Millennium Pain Center supports a pre-clinical research laboratory located on the campus of Illinois State University, Normal, IL. The primary areas of interest that are being actively pursued are in the areas of electrical spinal neuromodulation and pain treatment alternatives using pulsed-radiofrequency. Pre-clinical research is primarily focused on determining the mechanism by which these pain therapies reduce or eliminate pain sensation.

Clinical Research:
Our research staff coordinators and investigators are committed to providing quality patient care while upholding the highest standards of precise and accurate data for research. Our research staff has established long-lasting relationships with sponsors, CRO’s and IRB’s and offer unique backgrounds that span all areas of the research industry. This experience allows our coordinators to handle complex research protocols with minimal error and precise data collection.

Our research center has Phase II- IV trial study experience in pharmaceutical, medical device, drug and procedural clinical trials.

Other Information

While the Millennium Pain Center offices are recognized as leaders in chronic pain treatment, they also have been involved in ongoing preclinical and clinical research for many years. Since its inception in 1998, the Millennium Pain Center, under the direction of Dr. Ramsin Benyamin, has remained committed to conducting both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored research, continuing education, teaching of future physicians and scientists, participation in local, national, and international forums, and finally publishing our own research in peer-reviewed journals. The physicians at Millennium Pain Center travel throughout the country and the world to receive training and to train others in new techniques and contribute to the shared wealth of knowledge through presentations, publications, and workshops. We firmly believe that our involvement in research fosters an atmosphere of continued learning, expanding our scope and understanding in the young and fast-changing world of chronic pain management. In addition, our pairing with carefully selected commercial sponsors of research allows us to offer our patients the newest and most innovative drugs, procedures and devices available in the U.S.

The study coordinators are the primary contacts with study subjects, carefully gathering and recording study data during patient visits and procedures. Our study coordinators adhere to the principles of good clinical practices (GCPs), universally recognized as a critical requirement to the conduct of research involving human subjects. As added protection, all research protocols, study investigators, and staff are approved and periodically reviewed by ethics panels to ensure that patients’ rights are protected and that ethical practices are employed.

For more information concerning research opportunities at any of the Millennium Pain Center offices, please call 309-662-4321 and choose 7 from the telephone tree. Any of our research coordinators, Jessica Short, Dhruva Patel or Jessica Lowe can help you with your inquiry into currently available clinical research options and specific inclusion and exclusion criteria.
