Research Center Profile:
Office of Clinical Research, University of Missouri
University of Missouri Health Care (MUHC) offers comprehensive
primary, secondary and tertiary health care services. The system
includes five hospitals and a referral network of numerous clinics.
The Hospital and Children's Hospital are located adjacent to
the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital. University Hospital houses
the area’s only Level I Trauma Center and treats more than 25,000
patients in its emergency room each year. Ellis Fischel Cancer
Center is Missouri's only hospital dedicated solely to cancer
care. A faculty of 70 basic scientists and 260 clinicians joins 350
residents to supervise patient care and student teaching. The
facilities are located halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City,
with outpatient clinics in a dozen communities throughout the
region. In addition, the Missouri Telehealth Network (MTN) provides
high quality specialty care in 18 rural Missouri sites. MTN
received the 2003 American Telemedicine Association President's
Award for the Advancement of Telemedicine. The School of Medicine
provides postgraduate medical training in virtually all specialties
and subspecialties. MUHC had 16,854 inpatient admissions during a
recent year, about 1,000 newborns, and over 4,000 ambulatory
surgeries. In addition, nearly 600,000 physician visits are
expected for the current year.
The University houses the Missouri Arthritis Rehabilitation
Research and Training Center (MARRTC), the only federally funded
arthritis rehabilitation research and training center in the
country. MARRTC's mission is to become a national leader in the
area of disability management, improve the quality of life and
promote independent living among people with arthritis and
arthritic conditions. MARRTC is conducting cutting-edge
rehabilitation research that addresses the needs of people with
arthritis in general, as well as the specific needs of minority
populations, who are particularly vulnerable to the devastating
effects of arthritis.
The University is home to many dedicated and experienced
researchers. Together with coordinators and other support staff
members, these researchers form an effective research team
dedicated to discovering tomorrow's health care today. The
Health Sciences Center has conducted clinical trials for more than
40 years. The Office of Clinical Research provides full
administrative and nursing services to clinical investigators.
The Office of Clinical Research is a fully equipped four bed
facility in the School of Medicine. The facility contains space for
monitor visits, meetings with investigators, records storage,
supplies storage, and related equipment. The Office is adjacent to
University Hospital and has access to a wide spectrum of clinical
and laboratory services.
The Office of Clinical Research nurse coordinators are
registered nurses with a wide range of clinical experience and are
certified by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals
(ACRP). All staff are fully trained in compliance issues. Services
provided include budgeting, recruitment, management of clinical
trials operations, coordination of IRB submissions, and
recruitment.
Staff members are also available to perform a variety of
clinical services for investigators including:
- EKG and blood pressure monitoring
- Renal diagnostic testing
- Apheresis
- Drug titration
- Doppler studies
- IV infusions/phlebotomy
- CRF data collection/completion
- Patient education
- Coordination of ancillary services such as radiology,
laboratory testing, cardiology testing and nuclear
medicine
MUHC system includes five hospitals and partnerships with 17
hospitals and health care centers in urban and rural areas. The
Center serves a patient population seeking primary, secondary, and
tertiary services through its institutions, affiliates, and network
of clinics.
