Research Center Profile:
Central Texas Clinical Research
CTCR is a dedicated research site located on a major medical
campus anchored by St. David's Hospital - a 400+ bed acute care
hospital. We have a full time site manager and 5 highly motivated
study coordinators. Also on campus are a geropsychiatric hospital,
physical rehabilitation hospital and an LTAC facility.
Additionally, there are dozens of private medical practices
including those of most of our physicians. Two other large
hospitals and a multispecialty residency program are also within 2
miles of our offices. We are only one block from The University of
Texas at Austin with it's population of almost 50,000 students.
Our facility is privately owned by local physicians who are closely
involved with day to day operation of the unit. CTCR was formed in
1999 and has grown rapidly ever since as we strive to provide ever
better service to those developing new medications.
Our Mission Statement:
Central Texas Clinical Research was founded by physicians with the
goal of providing high quality data in an expeditious manner to
facilitate the availability of new therapeutic options for the
general public. We believe that by doing so, we can benefit people
throughout the world.
We do a lot of work with HIV therapeutics, vaccines, and disease
modifying agents including anabolics and erythropoesis stimulating
agents. In several of our studies over the last few years in this
clinical area, we were the highest enrolling site in the
nation.
We similarly do a lot of work with hepatitis C and have access
to a very large patient population with this illness.
We have experience working on studies in chronic renal failure
patients (both dialysis and non-dialysis patients). We have
experience with administering agents during dialysis as needed in
the 4 dialysis units available to us.
In the past, we have also performed hyperlipidemia work and
currently have several studies for type II diabetic patients using
both insulin and oral agents.
We have conducted several successful trials for agents treating
peripheral neuropathy and will be starting our first sexual
dysfunction study this fall.
Most of the studies we do are phase II-III although we have
really enjoyed the few phase I's that we have done and have
enrolled those quite well. We have some phase IV experience as well
but do not do these as often.
We are hoping to try some additional areas this year including:
hypertension, osteoporosis, dementia, depression, insomnia and
anxiety.
We are fortunate to have almost 20 specialists who are willing
to help our primary physicians in studies involving multiple areas
of medicine. Some of our physicians have as much as 15 years
experience in clinical research. Several hold or have held faculty
appointments.
Currently we do mostly outpatient studies though we have
completed successfully one in hospital cardiology study and hope to
start overnight pharmacokinetic and abuse liability studies in the
near future. Onsite, we have minus 70 and minus 20 freezers as well
as a temperature monitored medical refrigerator. We also have a
Heraeus Labofuge 400 centrifuge. We also have worked with both
central and local labs and centralized ECG and nerve conduction
interpretations. We have our own device for measuring nerve
conduction velocities and an impedance body fat analyzer. We are
located less than 20 minutes from Austin's airport and
excellent and affordable hotels are less than 5 minutes away-one
within walking distance. We are on major bus routes and also on
major north-south and east-west thoroughfares for our city. We are
less than 2 miles from the city center and sited among ethnically
and economically diverse neighborhoods.
We can provide lists of all our investigators and their
C.V.'s as needed. Represented are cardiology, family practice,
gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology,
orthopedic surgery, podiatry, and psychiatry. We have chosen these
physicians based on the quality of their work, their interest in
research, and their excellent interpersonal skills. Most of them
have extensive research experience.
Within a 3 mile radius are some of the poorest and wealthiest
neighborhoods in the city. Asians, Blacks, Caucasians and Hispanics
of all ages are well represented. In that radius we also have 2
universities and 2 colleges collectively having a student body of
approximately 60,000. We draw on the patients of our investigators
for studies as well as advertising on radio, television and in the
local papers. We have close relations with most of our local
television stations and they have helped us to be the highest
enrollers in the country in several of our most challenging
studies.
We are comfortable working with both local and central IRBs.
