Center Overview

Cary Pediatric practices are located in Cary, Fuquay-Varina and Apex, North Carolina. A total of thirteen (13) Board Certified pediatricians, three(3) Nurse Practitioners and twenty three (23) nurses and clinical staff provide services across the three locations. The Cary office serves as the Clinical Research Site and clinical trial subjects from the other two locations are referred to the Cary site. All sites maintained CLIA-certified laboratories and offer extended hours of care. A -20 degree freezer is on-site as well as a separate refrigerator/freezer dedicated to the storage of study medications and vaccines. There is also ample storage space for study medications, records and files. A fax machine for research use, internet access and monitoring space is also available.

Clinical Research Experience

Clinical research staff receive training on clinical research and as a result are knowledgeable in clinical trial execution, FDA regulations, and ICH and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. We offer responsive turn around for Site Interest Forms for upcoming studies, rapid patient enrollment, accessible and responsive investigators and staff, as well as a process and detail-oriented focus to deliver complete and accurate data.

Investigator Experience

Cary Pediatric Center's principal investigator is Dr. Mark Simpson, a board certified pediatrician who has been with the practice since 1983. has been a principal investigator since 2004.

Cary Pediatric Center serves the community as a general pediatric practice and works closely with local specialists and those at nearby teaching hospitals/referral centers. The practice treats pediatric patients from birth until age 21 years, with a wide range of illnesses such as colds, ear infections, dermatitis, asthma, bronchitis, allergies, ADD/ADHD (teamed with local specialists), as well as administering thousands of vaccinations each year. Annually, thousands of well-baby checks and routine physicals are performed. Cary Pediatric Center physicians hold privileges with two local hospitals, within close proximity to the office: Rex Hospital and Wake Medical Center (WakeMed) – Cary Campus.

We have been the site for 16 clinical trials and will begin additional trials in the next 3-4 months. We have experience with nutritional studies (infant formula), drug studies and vaccine trials. We have experience with both paper CRF's and e-CRF's, internet randomization and electronic data entry. We administer over 10,000 vaccines each year in the Cary location alone.

Staff Expertise

The Cary site has 2 dedicated Study Coordinators. Melodie Lynch BSN,RN,CCRC, has been with the practice for 19+ years and both coordinators have experience with all of the studies noted in the investigator experience section. Staff at the other two sites are trained to handle inquires and referrals for study participation.

Patient Demographics

Cary Pediatric Center's three sites have a patient population of over 30,000. Our annual patient visits are > 95,000.

Practice composition by gender is 49% female and 51% male. Composition of the practice by age is as follows:

  • Birth-12 months: 5%
  • 1-5 years: 29%
  • 6-10 years: 27%
  • 11-18 years: 30%
  • Over 18 years: 8%
