Research Center Profile:
Vassar Brothers Medical Center

Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC) is a 365-bed, voluntary,
non-profit, medical center located on the shore of the Hudson River
in Poughkeepsie, New York. VBMC first opened its doors as Vassar
Brothers Hospital in the spring of 1887.
Vassar Brothers Medical Center provides a full range of primary
and secondary acute care services on an inpatient and outpatient
basis. In addition to being a multi-purpose medical center caring
for patients from a broad spectrum of cultural and economic
backgrounds, VBMC offers highly specialized services and
state-of-the-art clinical facilities. VBMC has four "centers
of clinical excellence" - cardiac services, women and
children's services, oncology services, and the center for
advanced surgery.
In addition to general medical and surgical services, the
medical center fills the need for specialized clinical services
including: an Intensivist Program staffed by board-certified
physicians specializing in critical care medicine and treatment and
a Hospitalist Program that provides hospital management of a
physicians practice.
The Clinical Research Department at VBMC is available to conduct
phase III, and IV studies. Because VBMC provides care across the
entire spectrum of medicine, from prenatal to the elderly, we
afford the opportunity for research within many specialty areas
and/or disciplines. Our specific therapeutic specialties
include:
- Cardiovascular Disease (including hyperlipidemia,
hypertension)
- Cardiology (including stroke)
- Endocrine Disorders (including diabetes mellitus, obesity)
- Gastrointestinal Disorders (including GERD, irritable bowel
syndrome)
- Gynecology
- Infectious Disease
- Internal Medicine
- Neonatology
- Neurological Disorders (including migraines)
- Obstetrics
- Oncology (including Screenings and Prevention)
- Orthopedics
- Perinatology
- Pediatrics
- Pulmonary/Respiratory Disease (including asthma, bronchitis,
emphysema, pneumonia, pleurisy)
- Primary Prevention (including smoking cessation, nutritional
counseling)
- Renal Disorders (including urinary tract infections, nephritis,
renal stones)
- Urology (including incontinence)
- Wound Care
In the past VBMC has conducted trials with many major drug
firms, numerous device and diagnostic equipment manufacturers, and
a number of clinical research organizations and site management
organizations. VBMC and its affiliated clinicians are currently
involved in trials of drugs and devices in nearly all medical
disciplines, including asthma, cardiology, diabetes mellitus (adult
and pediatric), oncology, urology, and wound care. The VBMC Cancer
Registry has accessioned over 16,000 cancer cases since 1985 and is
actively following 6,000 of them.
Vassar Brothers Medical Center provides a full range of primary
and secondary acute care services on an inpatient and outpatient
basis. VBMC has four Centers of Clinical Excellence: The Cardiac
Center is the only cardiothoracic surgery program between
Westchester and Albany. Cardiovascular services available include:
open-heart surgery, Electrophysiologic (EP) procedures and
interventional and cardiac catheterizations. The Maternal-Child
Center includes the only level III Neonatal intensive care unit in
the mid-Hudson Valley, 28 private luxury maternity suites (each
with a private bath and striking view of the Hudson River), and a
dedicated pediatric unit. The comprehensive Dyson Center for Cancer
Care provides radiation therapy, inpatient treatment, an infusion
center, a state-of-the-art mammography unit, Stereotactic
Radiosurgery and PET therapy. With the Center for Advanced Surgery,
VBMC has one of the most sophisticated operating rooms for
minimally invasive surgery in the world, one of only a handful in
the United States. Additionally, VBMC's Wound Care Center is
one of only 2 wound care centers between Westchester and Albany,
and as is nationally recognized as being in the top 10 percentile.
The Wound Care Center at VBMC has a consistent "heal
rate" of greater than 90 percent and a "heal time"
consistently averaging 5 weeks or less.
The Department of Clinical Research at VBMC draws from a diverse
patient base of over 1,100,000 patients from different ethnic and
socioeconomic backgrounds including White, Hispanic, Black, and
Asian communities, and range in age from newborn to geriatrics.
This base is drawn from urban, suburban, and rural areas with
health status ranging from healthy to chronic and acute. Major
employers of this area include IBM, Agriculture, the Health Care
Industry, as well as Colleges and Universities such as Vassar
College, Marist College, Dutchess Community College, Bard College,
and SUNY New Paltz.
There is a positive attitude towards research within our
community. Our population base encompasses Dutchess County; the
four contiguous counties: Ulster, Orange, Putnam and Columbia; and
Western Connecticut. If necessary, patients can be provided
monetary compensation to assist in travel expenses.
