The NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD) is a 220 Bed Hospital
that specializes in the treatment of rheumatic, orthopedic,
neurological, other autoimmune disease, and rehabilitation. The
hospital, located in the Gramercy Park area of New York City is one
of the teaching hospitals for the New York University School of
Medicine (NYUSM). HJD is also a member of the Mount Sinai-NYU
Health Network. Our physicians are nationally and internationally
recognized for their expertise and achievements in the research and
treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. Our faculty is active in
basic, clinical and translational research. The hospital is
consistently rated as one of the nation’s leading centers in
Rheumatology and Orthopedic specialty care. The Department of
Rheumatology, under the direction of Dr. Steven B. Abramson, is
nationally and internationally recognized for excellence in
Rheumatology.
The Peter D. Seligman Center for Advanced Therapeutics of the
Department of Rheumatology and Medicine at HJD was established to
facilitate clinical research for the Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid
Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Osteoporosis, Psoriatic
Arthritis, Antiphospholipid Syndrome, and metabolic bone diseases
such as hyperparathyroidism and Paget’s disease. In addition,
inpatient post-operative analgesia studies are also conducted at
the hospital. Our patients come from the five boroughs of New York
as well as from the entire Tri-State area and reflect the
demographic diversity of New York City.
Clinical trials have been conducted at HJD since 1986. The
Center was formally established in 1992, and is under the direction
of its Medical Director, Dr. Clifton Bingham, III. Phase I - IV
studies have been or are currently being conducted for the
treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, systemic lupus
erythematosus, osteoporosis, psoriatic arthritis, metabolic bone
diseases such as hyperparathyroidism and Paget’s disease, and the
Antiphospholipid Syndrome for which we have an established national
registry. In addition, our center has conducted in-patient
analgesia trials. Studies at the Seligman Center have included
orally active drugs, intravenous infusions, and biologic agents
including monoclonal antibodies, anti-cytokine therapy, and
toleragens.
Studies at the Center have been sponsored by Abbott Bioresearch
Center, Abbott Immunology, Abbott Laboratories, Alexion, Amgen,
Anergen, Anika, Aventis, Bayer, Biogen, BioRad, Boehringer
Mannheim, Boehringer Ingelheim, Forrest Laboratories, Genelabs
Technologies, Hoechst Marion-Roussell, Human Genome Sciences, IDEC
Pharmaceuticals, ILEX, Immunex, Knoll, LaJolla Pharmaceutical
Company, Eli-Lilly, Merck, Merckle, Novartis, Otsuka America
Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, Pharmacia, Procter and Gamble
Pharmaceuticals, Regeneron, Roche, Sanofi-Winthrop,
Schering-Plough, United Therapeutics, Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories,
Xoma, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institutes
of Health.
The Center also collaborates with the NYU Department of Medicine
NIH-funded General Clinical Research Center (GCRC). The GCRC is
located on the 8th floor of Bellevue Hospital at 27th Street and
1st Avenue. This NIH-funded program, under the direction of its
Program Director, Dr. William Rom, and its Director of Clinical
Research, Dr. Diana Nilsen, is a Phase-I Unit with a staff of 12
experienced nurses. An Executive Advisory Committee must approve
all studies performed at the GCRC, in addition to the NYUSM’s IRB
approval. The GCRC has also a full service CLIA laboratory capable
of handling basic, clinical, and translational projects. Bellevue
Hospital also has a full service pharmacy with an experienced staff
of investigational drug pharmacists that work hand-in-hand with the
GCRC.
As of December 1, 2003, the Seligman Center will become a
satellite site for the NIH-funded GCRC at Bellevue Hospital.
The newly renovated facility officially opened its doors on June
4, 2003. It is located three blocks from the NYU-Hospital for Joint
Diseases (HJD). The facility is handicapped accessible and includes
six fully equipped exam rooms, an infusion suite, a laboratory, and
a secured drug storage room with refrigeration. The facility also
includes offices for the investigators, administrative staff,
coordinator and nursing staff, data entry personnel, a
biostatistician, and additional personnel including recruiters and
research assistants. In addition, the Center has conference rooms,
a fully equipped monitor workroom, and a kitchen for studies
requiring restrictive diets.
The Radiology Department located at the HJD is readily
available. Its facility includes standard X-Ray machines, CT
Scanners, MRI, and Bone Densitometry (DEXA). In addition, we have a
biometric core facility through our affiliation with the NYUSM.
The Center’s laboratory is capable of processing specimens for
basic, clinical, pharmacokinetics, and translational research
projects. Basic hematology and chemistry are easily accessible, as
is a fully equipped clinical immunology laboratory located at HJD.
Basic science research into the mechanisms of rheumatic diseases
and a strong collaboration with the senior scientific faculty and
more advanced research modalities, including flow cytometry and
PCR, as well as active translational, bench-to-bed side projects is
ongoing among the Seligman Center, GCRC, HJD, and affiliates.
