ArthroCare, Arthritis Care & Research P.C. is a center
dedicated to clinical research that is affiliated with Dr.
Fairfax's private practice. Research complements the care of
our patients by enhancing a different option and helping find more
effective medications.
We have been conducting phase II, III, and IV clinical research
and device studies for over 4 years. Our therapeutic specialties
include: rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, chronic pain, lupus,
fibromyalgia, Sjogren's ect, as well as ulcers and
gastrointestinal disorders.
We have worked with the following sponsors: Genetech, Merck,
Biogen Idec, Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer, SmithKline Beecham,
Purdue Pharma LP, Ortho McNeil, Novartis, Wyeth Ayerst, Astra
Zeneca, Cypress Bioscience, Roche , DOV Pharmaceuticals, Mirramack,
Amgen, and Abbott.
We have worked with the following CRO's: Kendle, Quintiles,
Covance, PPD Pharmaco ,Clinquest , PRA International, Kato
Research,and Parexel.
We offer our outpatient facilities for on-site endoscopy. The
research center is staffed by qualified, trained clinical research
coordinators, RN’s. We are conveniently located in downtown Phoenix
within minutes of major highways and Phoenix Sky Harbor
Airport.
Michael J. Fairfax, D.O.
Dr. Michael J. Fairfax graduated from The Kirksville College of
Osteopathic Medicine in 1977. He served an internal medicine
residency at Naval Hospital, San Diego, California from 1980 to
1983, and rheumatology fellowship at St. Louis University School of
Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri from 1985 to 1987. He is certified by
the American Board of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. He is
medical director of ArthroCare, Arthritis Care and Research, with
offices in central Phoenix, Mesa and Sun program. he is coordinator
of the Center's bone densitometry and osteoporosis program. He
is a member of the International Society of Clinical Densitometry
and American College of Rheumatology. He holds teaching positions
at The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine - Southwest
Campus and Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has served
on various committees through the Arthritis Foundation while in
private practice in Michigan and currently with the central Arizona
chapter. His special interests include rheumatoid arthritis,
pediatric arthritis and osteoporosis.
Charles S. Mitchell, M.D.
Dr. Charles Mitchell received his BS degree from Spring Hill
College in Mobile, Alabama in 1956. He received his medical degree
from the University of Mississippi in Jackson, Mississippi in 1960.
He served his internship at Vanderbilt University Hospital in
Nashville, Tennessee and from 1963 to 1964 was Chief Medical
Resident there. He served in the military where he was Deputy Chief
of Medicine at U.S.P.H.S. Indian Hospital and Veterans
Administration Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Mitchell maintained a
private clinical practice in Phoenix, AZ for almost thirty years.
He is a Senior Gastroenterologist in the state of Arizona, He has
been an intricate part of ArthroCare and Arizona Research and
Education. He is noted for his work in gastropathy as it relates to
the NSAID usage of the arthritis patient. Dr. Mitchell is and has
been involved in national and international research.

population, as well as newly diagnosed patients.
