Rheumatology Consultants is the private practice of Steven J.
Klein, M.D., F.A.C.R., C.C.D.
Rheumatology Consultants was started in 1985 as a private
rheumatology practice and in 1994 expanded to include comprehensive
osteoporosis care when Dr. Klein relocated from southern California
to join the practice. With the acquisition of a Hologic QDR 1000
DXA Scanner in 1994, The Osteoporosis Center was opened in
Hagerstown.
Because of the success of The Osteoporosis Center in Hagerstown,
we formed The Osteoporosis and Clinical Trials Center which opened
a second office in Cumberland, Maryland in July 1996. For this
center we acquired the Hologic QDR-4500C DXA Scanner and we hired
three registered nurses as the study coordinators.
In 2004 and 2005, we upgraded our densitometry machines in
Hagerstown and Cumberland to GE Lunar Prodigy Advance equipment.
This has allowed us to expand our capabilities to include total
body scanning and vertebral fracture assessment.
Since 1995 in our Hagerstown and Cumberland offices we have
participated in many phase II and phase III clinical trials. Over
the years our clinical trials program has focused on COX-II
inhibitors for Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis, as well as
unique analgesics for osteoarthritis. Additionally our centers have
continued to be actively involved in postmenopausal and male
osteoporosis, phase III trials of bisphosphonates, SERM's,
parathyroid hormone, and hormone replacement therapy. We currently
have five study coordinators. For more detailed information about
our trials experience please see our web site

significant role in our growth and success in clinical trial
enrollment. Our location in Cumberland, Maryland is particularly
exciting because we are able to offer, state of the art technology
and study participation opportunities to an historically under
served population in that city and to all points west including
West Virginia and southern Pennsylvania.

Today, Rheumatology Consultants is the sole provider of
rheumatologic and comprehensive osteoporosis care in Western
Maryland, with offices in Hagerstown and Cumberland. Our practice
is unique in that we draw our patient population from a tri-state
area (Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia) with a population
of approximately 500,000 people. The area has a large elderly
population, which is reflected in our rheumatology practice as a
whole, where the patient ratio is approximately 2:1
female:male.
Our unique clinical densitometry report, which was developed by
Dr. Klein, has drawn praise and inquiries from The Bone Club in
Baltimore, the chief of the Department of Endocrinology at The
Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., and numerous
physicians in the area. Dr. Klein has also been instrumental in
developing and implementing strict quality control standards for
all bone densitometry services provided in the Centers, with
particular emphasis placed on insuring accurate and precise
baseline and follow-up scans.
We are members of The International Society for Clinical
Densitometry, The American Society for Bone Mineral Research and
The National Osteoporosis Foundation. Dr. Klein and our
technologists are certified by the International Society for
Clinical Densitometry.
