APEPTICO successfully completes phase I AP301 trial

APEPTICO has completed a phase I clinical trial for its pulmonary sodium ion channel activator AP301. The orally inhaled drug candidate was safe and well-tolerated by all study participants. AP301 is being developed for the prevention and treatment of oedematous respiratory failure in patients suffering from lung infection, lung injury and lung transplantation.

NERI receives $45 million grant to support Pediatric Heart Network

New England Research Institutes (NERI) has received a $45 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the continuance of its work on the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN). PHN is a multi-center clinical research network started in 2001, supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health, to study congenital and acquired heart diseases that occur in childhood. This grant provides five more years of funding to nine clinical centers and NERI as the data coordinating center, to conduct clinical research studies in children and young adults with heart defects and other heart diseases.

Metabolomx awarded $1.14 million grant from NCI

Metabolomx, a diagnostic company focused on breath analysis for the detection of cancer, has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The $1.14 million combined phase I/II Fast-Track contract will support the research and development of Metabolomx' sensor array system to detect lung cancer.

Sanofi names Meeker CEO of Genzyme

Sanofi has named David Meeker as chief executive officer of Genzyme, a Sanofi company, effective November 1, 2011. He will report to Christopher A. Viehbacher, chief executive officer of Sanofi, and will join the group management committee. Viehbacher will retain the position of chairman, Genzyme.

Cubist acquires Adolor in an agreement worth $415 million

Cubist Pharmaceuticals and Adolor have signed a definitive agreement under which Cubist will acquire all of the outstanding shares of Adolor for approximately $190 million on a fully-diluted basis, net of Adolor's third quarter 2011 cash balance. The total transaction is valued at up to $415 million, net of Adolor's third quarter 2011 cash balance, and is expected to be accretive in 2012.

Survey: Top CROs doubled workforce over past decade

Over the last 10 years, the top nine global CROs have more than doubled their workforce, which now exceeds 72,000 employees, and their revenues have increased at a compound annualized rate of 11% as they increasingly play a larger and more integral role in the drug development infrastructure, according to a new Association of Clinical Research Organizations (ACRO) member survey.
