Caliper, Pfizer launch platform for drug safety

Caliper Life Sciences, a provider of tools and services for drug
discovery and life sciences research, has launched a new services
offering based on a panel of cellular assays that measure the effects of
drug candidates on functional activity of proteins called kinases involved
in critical cell-signaling pathways. The technology platform and initial
panel of nine assays were developed in collaboration with Pfizer. The new offering, called In-Cell KinaseScreen, is immediately available for compound screening, profiling, and custom assay development services for CDAS' clients, ranging from academia to pharmaceutical companies.

Sanofi restructues cutting sales jobs

French drugmaker Sanofi has reported it is reorganizing research operations in the U.S. and planning to trim its sales force for the second time in barely a year as it aims to boost efficiency, according to the Associated Press.

Karyopharm Therapeutics secures $10 million in Seires A2 financing

Karyopharm Therapeutics has completed a $10M Series A2 financing which complements the $20M Series A financing announced one year ago. Both Series A and A2 were lead by Chione. This brings the total raised by the company to approximately $32M since its inception. The funds will be used to expand the planned phase I program, targeted to begin in mid 2012 with Karyopharm's oral selective inhibitors of nuclear export (SINE) for various cancers. The company is also evaluating related transport modulators for use in dermatologic, inflammatory, and viral disorders.

Resverlogix begins dosing in phase IIb ASSURE trial

Resverlogix has initiated dosing in ASSURE, a phase IIb clinical trial led by the Cleveland Clinic. ASSURE is a 26-week, multi-center, double-blind, randomized, parallel group, placebo-controlled clinical trial that will assess coronary atherosclerotic plaque changes in response to Resverlogix's lead drug RVX-208 using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS).  ASSURE will examine the early effects of RVX-208 induced ApoA-I production on atherosclerotic plaque regression in the setting of patients with coronary artery disease who have a low level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).  A total of 310 patients are expected to participate in ASSURE of which 77 will receive placebo and 233 will be given 100 mg twice daily of RVX-208.

Survey: Covance central laboratory services ranks first

Covance central laboratory services ranked first, by a wide margin, in an independent global survey of 550 physician investigators participating in clinical trials. The majority (54%) of the study participants named Covance central laboratory services as their "most preferred" central laboratory, with investigators citing Covance three times more often than the nearest competitor. Investigators also reported having the "best overall relationship" with Covance, rating it 8.4 on a scale of 1 to 10.
