FDA approves 35 new drugs in fiscal year 2011

Over the past 12 months, the FDA approved 35 new medicines. This is among the highest number of approvals in the past decade, surpassed only by 2009 (37). Many of the drugs are important advances for patients, including: two new treatments for hepatitis C; a drug for late-stage prostate cancer; the first new drug for Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 30 years; and the first new drug for lupus in 50 years.

Life sciences venture capital investing drops 18% in Q3

Following two quarters of growth, venture capital funding in the life sciences sector, which includes the biotechnology and medical device industries, fell 18% during the third quarter of 2011, according to a new PwC US report, "Reaching for Growth." The report includes data from the PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture Capital MoneyTree Report, based on data from Thomson Reuters.

Alnylamm, GSK collaborate in vaccine production

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals has formed a collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline focused on Alnylam's VaxiRNATM technology for certain GSK vaccine products, including influenza. VaxiRNA is a new RNAi technology for the enhanced production of viruses used in the manufacture of vaccine products. GSK is the first company to form a collaboration accessing this new platform.

Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute is the latest research organization to partner with Pfizer as part of Pfizer's commitment to transforming research and development through a focus on translational medicine. The Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) is a research unit at Pfizer dedicated to open innovation through establishing global partnerships with academic research institutions to bridge the gap between discovery science and clinical applications.

Senesco initiates dosing in SNS01-T study

Senesco Technologies has initiated dosing in its phase Ib/IIa clinical study of SNS01-T at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. The study is an open-label, multiple-dose, dose-escalation study which will evaluate the safety and tolerability of SNS01-T when administered by intravenous infusion to relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma patients.

Taplmmune, Aeras ink research collaboration

TapImmune has signed a research collaboration with Aeras. The overall goal of this collaboration will be to evaluate the efficacy of TAP in concert with novel vaccine vectors encoding TB immunogens under development at Aeras with the aim of advancing suitable candidates to clinical development. Aeras will conduct all pre-clinical development studies at their laboratories in Rockville, MD.

Thoratec has enrolled the first patient into the ROADMAP (risk assessment and comparative effectiveness of left ventricular assist device and medical management in ambulatory heart failure patients) study. The patient was enrolled at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.
