MDS Cuts 210 Staff in North America

MDS has become the second pharmaceutical services company in as many weeks to report a round of layoffs. Toronto-based MDS has slashed 210 jobs from its North American workforce, representing 4% of MDS’s 5,500 worldwide employees. The company stated that 75% of the lay offs will come from its MDS Pharma Services (contract research) division with the remainder from its Analytical Technologies (medical equipment manufacturing) group. MDS cited that the action will result in third quarter charges of $18 million and $10 million in write downs at its Pharma Services laboratory based in Montreal. Company shares rose 1.8 per cent, or 26 cents, to $14.85 in trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.  MDS is scheduled to release its third quarter fiscal 2008 earnings on September 4, 2008.

Synergy Research Continues Global CRO Network with CRO in Pakistan

Moscow-based contract research organization (CRO) Synergy Research Group forged an alliance with Metrics Research, a five-year-old CRO and site network organization (SMO) based in Karachi, Pakistan. The move falls in line with Synergy’s mission to create an international CRO alliance network to compete with the large global CROs.

etrials CEO Chip Jennings Steps Down

Adding to etrials’ ongoing financial woes and a recent flurry of senior management changes, Eugene "Chip" Jennings, CEO at the Morrisville, N.C.-based eClinical company, unexpectedly resigned his post, citing “family reasons.” Jennings was CEO for a little more than a year, replacing John Cline founder and former CEO who resigned in May 2007.

Migraine Study Shows Merck's Telcagepant Promising

Merck issued positive results from a phase III pivotal clinical trial of telcagepant, a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonists for the treatment of migraine headaches. Merck stated the company plans to file for FDA approval in the U.S. in 2009.

In an effort to “realign” its headcount with the company’s “business needs,” Raleigh, N.C.-based contract research organization (CRO) INC Research laid off 34 employees—or 3%—within its U.S. clinical operations. Internet news outlet WRAL.com in Raleigh reported Trisha Vonder Reith, INC’s executive director of corporate communications, as stating:
