Principal investigator charged for insider trading

It’s rare for a principal investigator (PI) to face insider trading charges based on confidential developments in a clinical trial. But earlier this month, Edward J. Kosinski, M.D., a PI and president of Connecticut Clinical Research, was indicted on two counts of securities fraud by a federal grand jury in Connecticut for allegedly trading shares of Regado Biosciences in 2014 after receiving non-public information about the clinical trial from the project manager.

Syndax Pharmaceuticals, a privately held oncology company based in Waltham, Mass., has announced that Briggs W. Morrison, M.D., is joining the company as CEO and a member of the board of directors, and Michael A. Metzger is joining the company as president and chief operating officer. Morrison joins Syndax from AstraZeneca, where he was executive vice president, global medicines development and chief medical officer. Tobira Therapeutics completes merger with Regado Biosciences

Tobira Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of novel treatments for liver and immuno-inflammatory diseases, has merged with Regado Biosciences. Tobira raised $40 million of common stock from a combination of new investors and all current Tobira institutional investors, including the previously announced $13 million in debt that converted to common stock in this closing. Together with approximately $33 million net cash on Regado’s balance sheet, the combined company has approximately $70 million in cash to advance clinical development of first-in-class dual CCR2/CCR5 inhibitor cenicriviroc (CVC), which is being evaluated in the phase IIb CENTAUR clinical trial for the treatment of patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis.

Regado Biosciences, a development stage biotechnology company based in Basking Ridge, N.J., and Tobira Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company in South San Francisco, have agreed to merge. Privately held Tobira will merge with a wholly-owned subsidiary of Regado in an all-stock transaction. The merger will create a company focused on the development of novel treatments for liver and inflammatory diseases.
