ACRP advances CRC competency-based standards

The Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) has launched a new initiative to develop competency standards for clinical research coordinators (CRCs) as part of a larger effort to advance the professionalism of the clinical research workforce. The project will establish minimum standards regarding the knowledge and skill required for entry-level study coordinators and create a hierarchy of competencies focused on performance rather than longevity. Pathways needed for CRCs to advance their careers will be clearly defined and ACRP will develop tools to assess job proficiency, identify gaps and provide training.

NIH to fund seven research centers in minority institutions

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), part of the NIH, will fund seven new awards to support the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Specialized Centers program. RCMI is designed to support institutional research capacity and foster the career development of new and early career investigators conducting minority health and health disparities research. The centers will share approximately $122 million over five years, pending available funds.

Minority groups have historically been excluded from clinical research, an inequity that has led to well-documented public health problems in which therapies tested primarily in Caucasian patients do not work as well in other ethnic and racial groups. This problem is famously exemplified by Sanofi’s blood thinner Plavix, which was approved in 1997 but slapped with a boxed warning in 2010 after researchers realized up to half of Asian and Pacific Islander populations cannot process the drug.

NIH launches substance use and adolescent brain development study

The NIH has awarded 13 grants to research institutions around the country as part of a study about the effects of adolescent substance use on the developing brain. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study will follow about 10,000 children beginning at ages 9 and 10, before they initiate drug use, through the period of highest risk for substance use and other mental health disorders. Scientists will track exposure to substances (including nicotine, alcohol and marijuana), academic achievement, cognitive skills, mental health and brain structure and function using advanced research methods.
