Dementia Consortium funds dementia treatments team

The Dementia Consortium, a public-private partnership initiative bridging the gap between academic research and the pharmaceutical industry, is supporting a project led by Dr. David Brough at the University of Manchester to develop novel therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease targeting the immune system. This is the fifth project supported by the Dementia Consortium, and has been awarded £191,757 by the initiative.

Merck, Pfizer announce FDA and EMA filing acceptances of three marketing applications

Merck, known as MSD outside the U.S. and Canada, and Pfizer, have announced that the FDA has accepted for review three New Drug Applications (NDAs) for medicines containing ertugliflozin, an investigational SGLT2 inhibitor in development to help improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes: one for monotherapy, one for the fixed-dose combination of ertugliflozin and JANUVIA (sitagliptin), and one for the fixed-dose combination of ertugliflozin and metformin. The Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) action date from the FDA is in December 2017 for the three NDAs.

Biothera Pharmaceuticals has announced a collaboration with Merck, known as MSD outside the U.S. and Canada, to expand the companies’ ongoing clinical program evaluating KEYTRUDA (pembrolizumab), Merck’s anti-PD-1 inhibitor, in combination with Biothera’s Imprime PGG, a Pathogen Associated Molecular Patterning molecule, or PAMP. Imprime PGG acts as an immunological “ignition switch” enlisting the innate immune system to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of tumor targeting, anti-angiogenic, and immune checkpoint inhibitor antibodies.

CRT, Merck to develop inhibitors for cancer and blood disorders

Cancer Research Technology (CRT), the development and commercialization arm of Cancer Research U.K., has entered into a license agreement with MSD, known as Merck in the U.S. and Canada, to develop inhibitors of protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5). These new drugs, which potentially have clinical applications in both cancer and non-cancer blood disorders, have been developed by the Australian Cooperative Research Center (CRC) for Cancer Therapeutics (CTx) with support from the Wellcome Trust and CRT.​
