Horizon Pharma announces phase III results from Friedreich’s Ataxia study

Horizon Pharma, a biopharmaceutical company focused on improving patients’ lives by identifying, developing, acquiring and commercializing differentiated and accessible medicines that address unmet medical needs, has announced that the phase III trial, STEADFAST (Safety, Tolerability and Efficacy of ACTIMMUNE Dose Escalation in Friedreich’s Ataxia study), evaluating ACTIMMUNE (interferon gamma-1b) for the treatment of Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) did not meet its primary endpoint of a statistically significant change from baseline in the modified Friedreich’s Ataxia Rating Scale (FARS‐mNeuro) at 26 weeks versus treatment with placebo. FARS‐mNeuro is an exam-based rating scale that measures disease progression based on functional parameters such as speech, ability to swallow, upper and lower limb coordination, gait and posture.

Horizon Pharma to acquire Raptor Pharmaceutical

Horizon Pharma and Raptor Pharmaceutical have entered into a definitive agreement under which Horizon Pharma will acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares of Raptor Pharmaceutical Corp. common stock for $9.00 per share in cash, for an implied fully diluted equity value of approximately $800 million. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Contract research organizations (CROs) should consider partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) when conducting clinical trials, according to an attendee at the recent Clinical Trial Collaborations conference in Boston, Massachusetts. “The atmosphere is right for increasing the number of industry-VA collaborations,” said Dawn McKenna, executive director of the Bedford VA Research Corporation in Bedford, Massachusetts. McKenna spent years working in the pharmaceutical research and development industry as well as government and nonprofit areas before taking the helm in Bedford last year.

Horizon withdraws offer to acquire Depomed

Horizon Pharma, a Dublin-based biopharmaceutical company, has announced that at a hearing, Judge Peter Kirwan of the Superior Court of California for the County of Santa Clara granted Depomed‘s motion for preliminary injunctive relief against Horizon Pharma’s alleged use of information that Depomed claimed was confidential. In his ruling, Judge Kirwan did not grant the injunctive relief Horizon Pharma had sought regarding the legality of Depomed’s poison pill and certain of the bylaw amendments announced by Depomed’s board of directors on July 13.

Horizon Pharma proposes to acquire Depomed for $3B

Horizon Pharma, a Dublin, Ireland-based biopharmaceutical company, has proposed to acquire all outstanding shares of Depomed, a U.S. specialty pharmaceutical company, for a per share consideration of $29.25 in an all-stock, tax-free exchange valued at approximately $3 billion. Horizon’s proposal represents a premium of 42% to the closing price of Depomed on July 6. The transaction, if consummated, would be immediately and substantially accretive to Horizon’s adjusted diluted earnings per share.
