Icon steps up for patient-reported outcome measure endpoint validation

The FDA has chosen Icon to create industry-standard patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures and to validate those endpoints for antibacterial drug trials. Partnering on the initiative with Icon is the Biomarkers Consortium and the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health (FNIH). Also involved is the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

NIH award expands landmark Alzheimer’s biomarker study

The Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI)—the long-running NIH-supported study investigating brain and fluid biomarkers of the disease—enters a new phase of discovery with the launch of ADNI3. With the recent NIH award of approximately $40 million over the next five years—coupled with anticipated private sector contributions of $20 million through the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH)—ADNI3 will use cutting-edge technologies in brain imaging as it recruits hundreds of new volunteers. Expansion of the groundbreaking study, now in its 12th year, will further develop ways to speed clinical trials by providing researchers the biomarkers needed to detect the onset and track the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

International diabetes research knowledge portal opens

Researchers funded by the NIH and the Foundation for the NIH (FNIH) have expanded a recently launched online library, called a knowledge portal, which allows open-access searching of human genetic and clinical information on type 2 diabetes. Individual data will remain confidential. The portal includes information from several major international networks, collected from decades of research.

Amgen joins NCI to accelerate development of personalized cancer treatments

Amgen will collaborate with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the NIH, and other public and private sector partners, on the Lung Master Protocol (Lung-MAP), a new clinical trial program that will use biomarker-driven research and genomic profiling to match squamous cell lung cancer patients to investigational treatments based on their individual cancer profiles. Lung-MAP is the first trial of its kind to study a large number of rare lung cancer subsets under one trial protocol.
