University of Maryland receives $23 million for HIV vaccine

Scientists at the University of Maryland School of Medicine will be able to move forward on decades-long work for a promising HIV/AIDS vaccine after receiving $23.4 million from a consortium led by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Last March it took 35 days for a full Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for a clinical trial from the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine, which reviews more than 1,000 applications annually. This March, IRB approval time dropped to 21 days, and just 13 days in February.

Mersana initiates phase Ib of lead cancer drug

Massachusetts-based Mersana Therapeutics announced the initiation of a phase 1b extension study with its lead cancer product, XMT-1001, a novel DNA topoisomerase I inhibitor based on the company's Fleximer polymer conjugate platform, in second-line gastric cancer and second-/third-line non-small cell lung cancer.  The study will be carried out in 10 clinical centers in the U.S.
