Cord Blood Registry forms scientific and medical advisory board

Cord Blood Registry (CBR) has announced the establishment of a scientific and medical advisory board (SMAB). Composed of internationally renowned stem cell experts, the SMAB will provide input and guidance to help advance CBR's mission to expand the scope of newborn stem cell therapies that may be available to patients and their families. The founding members of the SMAB are Dr. Charles Cox, Dr. Mahendra Rao, Dr. Leslie Silberstein and Dr. Alan Trounson. Rao will be the inaugural chairman of the SMAB, and he also will be acting as CBR's chief clinical and regulatory advisor.

AstraZeneca collaborates to use CRISPR technology

AstraZeneca has announced four research collaborations aimed at harnessing the power of CRISPR, a pioneering genome-editing technique, across its entire discovery platform in the company’s key therapeutic areas. The four research collaborations are with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cambridge, U.K.; the Innovative Genomics Initiative, California; Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, Mass.; and the Broad Institute/Whitehead Institute, Cambridge, Mass. The technology will allow AZ to identify and validate new drug targets in preclinical models that closely resemble human disease.

Diagnostics Development Hub to boost biomedical research in Singapore

Singapore's biomedical research sector received a major boost with the launch of a new Diagnostics Development (DxD) Hub. The DxD Hub aims to develop medical diagnostics as one part of the medical technologies industry, improve healthcare through development of diagnostic solutions and accelerate production of new diagnostics devices. Diagnostics is one of four innovation clusters shortlisted to be funded under the $200 million Innovation Cluster Program (ICP) launched Oct. 2013.

Thermo Fisher Scientific inks agreement with GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a Waltham, Mass.-based healthcare equipment company, has inked an agreement with GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer to develop a universal next-generation sequencing (NGS) oncology test for solid tumors that will serve as a companion diagnostic for multiple drug programs.

North Shore InnoVentures receives $1.65M from Massachusetts Life Sciences Center

North Shore InnoVentures (NSIV), a New England technology incubator and business accelerator, has received a capital grant of $1.65 million from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC). The grant will allow NSIV to expand its current laboratory facilities over the next three years and purchase advanced analytical instrumentation. This grant is part of a larger $5 million award to the Life Sciences Consortium of the North Shore (LSCNS), consisting of Endicott College, Gordon College, North Shore InnoVentures, North Shore Community College and Salem State University, that will fund major lab/facility and equipment upgrade projects at the member institutions and organizations.

Thermo Fisher Scientific has completed its acquisition of Life Technologies for $13.6 billion ($76.13 in cash per fully diluted common share), plus the assumption of $1.5 billion in net debt. The completion of the transaction follows the receipt of all required regulatory approvals.

Thermo Fisher and Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics have renewed their non-exclusive, long-term, royalty-bearing agreement for the use of Thermo Fisher’s Procalcitonin (B·R·A·H·M·S PCT) technology, currently available as an automated immunoassay on the Siemens ADVIA Centaur XP and CP systems in all countries outside the U.S. and China. The agreement extends a long-standing relationship between the companies.

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a healthcare equipment company, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Life Technologies, a global biotechnology tools company, for $76.00 in cash per fully diluted common share, or approximately $13.6 billion, plus the assumption of net debt at close ($2.2 billion as of year end 2012).
