Theorem Clinical Research, a King of Prussia, Penn.-based, mid-sized provider of comprehensive clinical research and development services, has appointed Connie Wierman as vice president of biopharmaceutical development. Wierman leads the company’s oncology therapeutic focus for the biopharmaceutical business unit.

Sanofi appoints two new members to executive committee

Global healthcare company Sanofi is creating two new units, global commercial operations and global divisions and strategic commercial development, to replace the former global operations unit. Peter Guenter, currently senior vice president, Europe, will be appointed executive vice president of global commercial operations. Pascale Witz, currently president and CEO of medical diagnostics at GE Healthcare, will join Sanofi as executive vice president of global divisions and strategic commercial development. Both Guenter and Witz will join the executive committee.

FDA fast tracks Sanofi and KaloBios' novel biologic for Pseudomonas aeruginosa

The FDA has granted Fast Track designation to Sanofi Pasteur and KaloBios Pharmaceuticals’ investigational drug KB001A, an antibody fragment intended for protection against bacterial pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) in mechanically-ventilated patients.

High school junior Natalie Ng wins International BioGENEius Challenge

Natalie Ng, a junior at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, Calif., won the International BioGENEius Challenge, the premier competition for high school students that recognizes outstanding research in biotechnology. Ng’s research in breast cancer and biomarkers helped her stand out from the 13 other finalists from across the U.S., Canada and Australia competing for the Challenge's top prize, a $7,500 cash award.

Bourne Partners, Covis Pharma acquire U.S. rights for five drugs from Sanofi

Covis Pharma, a Switzerland-based specialty pharmaceutical company, has formed an agreement with Sanofi-Aventis and certain affiliates to acquire full commercial rights for Nilandron (nilutamide), Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine), Rilutek (riluzole), Uroxatral (alfuzosin hydrochloride) and Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfate) in the U.S.

$262M Pan-European drug discovery platform launched

The European Lead Factory, a novel platform for innovative drug discovery, was launched Feb. 7 by an international consortium of 30 partners. The partnership, the first of its kind, is supported by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) and creates opportunities for the discovery of new medicines by providing public partners with an “industry-like” discovery platform to translate cutting-edge academic research into high-quality drug lead molecules on a scale and speed that was not possible previously.
