Janssen, Bayer, Portola form clinical collaboration

Janssen Pharmaceuticals has signed a clinical collaboration agreement with Portola Pharmaceuticals and Bayer HealthCare to evaluate the safety of PRT4445—an investigational-stage antidote for Factor Xa inhibitors—in healthy volunteers who have been administered the oral anticoagulant Xarelto (rivaroxaban). The study will evaluate several dosage strengths of PRT4445 and its ability to reverse the anticoagulant activity of Xarelto in emergency situations.

Portola, BMS, Pfizer ink collaboration on study on reversing anticoagulation

Portola Pharmaceuticals, a therapeutics company focused on thrombosis, inflammatory disease and cancer, global biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) and Pfizer have signed a clinical collaboration agreement to conduct a proof-of-concept study of PRT4445 and the investigational oral Factor Xa inhibitor Elquis (apixaban).

Portola Pharmaceutials secures $89 million in financing

Portola Pharmaceuticals has raised $89 million in a preferred stock financing. The financing round included existing investors who were joined by Temasek, an Asia investment company, and Eastern Capital Limited. Proceeds will be used primarily to advance betrixaban, a once-daily, oral Factor Xa inhibitor, through phase III clinical development and to advance development of its companion product, PRT064445, a recombinant Factor Xa inhibitor antidote designed to reverse anticoagulant activity in patients treated with Factor Xa inhibitors suffering major bleeds or requiring surgery. Portola plans to initiate a phase III betrixaban program to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in acute medically ill patients in the first half of 2012.
