Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, UNC expand IBD patient-focused engagement

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) is collaborating with the University of North Carolina School of Medicine (UNC) to create a research partnership between patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the scientific community. CCFA Partners is a "patient-powered research network" for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (collectively known as IBD) that uses state-of-the-art bioinformatics to engage and gather information from patients that researchers can study and analyze along with clinical and other patient-generated data.

The Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis has launched iConquerMS, a nationwide initiative by and for individuals living with multiple sclerosis who recognize the power of their health data and insights and want to harness that power to fuel research. The initiative's portal, www.iConquerMS.org, enables all people living with MS to play an active role in research, empowering them to securely submit their health data, propose topics of research that are most important to them, influence the research that is carried out by the initiative and become informed about the research process and specific studies.

PCORI, NIH request applications to study blood pressure control

The NIH, as part of a research partnership with the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), has issued a request for applications (RFA) to study how to improve blood pressure control among populations at highest risk for suffering hypertension-related strokes, heart attacks and other cardiovascular events. PCORI is a Wash. D.C.-based independent nonprofit organization authorized by Congress.

DuchenneConnect to join new national clinical research network

DuchenneConnect, a program of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), has been awarded $970,000 by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to take part in developing a health data network. DuchenneConnect will be part of PCORnet: the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network. The DuchenneConnect network is one of 29 networks that were approved for PCORnet. The formation of the new national PCORnet resource aims to boost the efficiency of health research.

PCORI approves $191 million for patient-centered comparative effectiveness research

The independent, nonprofit Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has approved a total of $97.3 million in new funding for 53 comparative effectiveness research (CER) studies designed to answer questions important to patients and those who care for them. It also has approved $93.5 million to build and expand the individual research data networks that will form PCORnet, a new, national, patient-centered clinical research network to facilitate CER.
