Rebecca Kush to serve on HITS Standards Committee

Rebecca Daniels Kush has been invited to serve on the HIT Standards Committee, a federal advisory committee that makes recommendations to the national coordinator on standards, implementation specifications and certification criteria for the electronic exchange and use of health information for the purposes of adoption, consistent with the implementation of the Federal Health IT Strategic Plan, and in accordance with policies developed by the HIT Policy Committee.

Upsher-Smith launches phase III epilepsy study

Upsher-Smith Laboratories initiated a phase III clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of USL261, an investigational intranasal midazolam, for the rescue treatment of seizures in patients on stable anti-epileptic drug (AED) regimens who require control of intermittent bouts of increased seizure activity, frequently referred to as seizure clusters. USL261 has been granted Orphan Drug designation for this use by the FDA.

FDA approves Whooping Cough vaccine

The FDA has approved GlaxoSmithKline’s BOOSTRIXR [Tetanus Toxoid, Reduced Diphtheria Toxoid, and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine, Adsorbed (Tdap)] for use in adults 65 years of age and older for active booster immunization against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). This approval makes BOOSTRIX the first Tdap vaccine approved for use in this age group.
