Clinical Trial Activity in Russia Dipped in 2009

According to Russia-based contract research organization (CRO) Synergy Research Group’s Annual Orange Report, Russia’s regulatory agency Federal Service on Surveillance in Healthcare and Social Development of the Russian Federation (RosZdravNadzor, RZN) approved 577 new clinical trials during 2009, 6% fewer than in 2008. Sixty percent, or 348 of the new studies, were multinational multi-center trials, down 4% from 2008.

Lindevall Returns as CEO of Encorium

CEO musical chairs continues at Wayne, Pa.-based contract research organization (CRO) Encorium . The company has reappointed Dr. Kai Lindevall as CEO, replacing David Ginsberg who left the company last summer when Encorium sold its U.S. business to Pierrel Research USA and Ginsberg became CEO there. Ginsberg had replaced Lindevall as CEO in September 2008. Lindevall, who replaced Kenneth Borow, M.D., as CEO in February 2008, has served as executive chairman since Ginsberg became CEO. Board member Shahab Fatheazam will serve as Encorium’s new chairman.

GSK, US Oncology in Clinical Trial Alliance

The Oncology R&D unit of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has entered into a new research alliance agreement with US Oncology, a nationwide cancer care company that supports a community-based research network specializing in phase I through IV oncology clinical trials. The non-exclusive collaboration is aimed at improving the execution time of GSK’s oncology clinical trials.

Ecron Acunova Founder Steps Down

Ecron Acunova, a CRO based out of Germany, India and the United States, appointed Antal Hajos managing director and CEO Europe, replacing ECRON founder and CEO Klaus Wiedey, who will serve as an advisor to the company. In his new role, Hajos will oversee all business, strategic and operational aspects of the European operations. Prior to joining Ecron Acunova last year, Hajos was director of global clinical operations with Altana Pharma and later CEO of Altana/Nycomed’s research and development center and Indian affiliate in Mumbai, India.
