Covance Launches Discovery and Translational Services Division

Covance to Close Preclinical Site

Covance is closing a testing site in Kalamazoo, Mich., as part of the CRO’s ongoing efforts to cut back its preclinical services. The site will be closed by November, and, according to published reports, 63 workers will lose their jobs.

Covance to Expand Food Safety Services with New Lab, Kellogg Contract

Covance plans to invest $14 million in a nutritional chemistry and food safety laboratory in Michigan as part of an effort to expand the contract research organization’s (CRO’s) food safety testing capabilities. The CRO also entered into a seven-year, $42-million contract with Kellogg Company, which will be an anchor client to Covance’s new facility.

ICON Extends Lilly Strategic Agreement to Japan

ICON has signed an extension to its strategic agreement with Eli Lilly and Company to manage the company’s clinical data management outside the U.S. This extension means that ICON will now also manage Lilly’s needs in Japan in addition to those in Europe, Canada, Latin America, Australia and Asia, which was originally agreed to in November 2008.

CT Approvals Down, Global Participation Up in Russia Q2

According to an Orange Paper released by Russia-based CRO, Synergy Research Group, Russia’s health agency, the Federal Service on Surveillance in Healthcare and Social Development (RosZdraNadzor, RZN) approved only 129 new clinical trials, including local and bioequivalence studies, during Q2 2009, representing a 17% decrease from Q2 last year. The percentage of approved multinational clinical trials increased slightly, however, to 65% of the total during this time period.
