A clinical trial of 596 patients testing whether lithium would slow the progression of Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), did not have positive results.  However, the findings did show that the use of a social network to enroll patients and report and collect data may be useful for future studies, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Last March it took 35 days for a full Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for a clinical trial from the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine, which reviews more than 1,000 applications annually. This March, IRB approval time dropped to 21 days, and just 13 days in February.

Australian doctors discover disparities in cancer research

Doctors in Australia, in a study conducted by the University of Sydney, revealed some serious disparities in cancer research.  The study indicates few clinical trials target four of the most serious types of cancer, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Speculation flies over Logical Therapeutics as sites report non-payment for services

Multiple investigative sites have been unable to collect payment from CRO PRA International for recent work they conducted on a phase IIb/III trial for Logical Therapeutics, a Waltham, Mass.-based biotechnology company developing a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), according to several independent sources.

Using interoperable digital identities, digital signatures and cloud computing can accelerate the initiation of a clinical trial and also lower costs, report a group of government and industry cancer researchers. They participated in the phase I of a pilot study that used interoperable digital identities and cloud-based digital signatures to eliminate reliance on paper forms in clinical trials.
