Biovest files for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection

Tampa, Fla.-based Biovest International has filed a petition for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and a Plan of Reorganization seeking to implement a restructuring of its balance sheet that would eliminate approximately $44 million in senior secured debt held by Laurus/Valens Funds and Corp Real, while also providing up to approximately $5.6 million in new operating funding.

Merck names Roger Perlmutter president of Merck Research Laboratories

Merck has appointed Roger M. Perlmutter, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president and president of Merck Research Laboratories (MRL), effective April 15. Dr. Perlmutter will succeed Peter S. Kim, Ph.D., who has served in the role since 2003. To ensure a seamless transition, Dr. Perlmutter and Dr. Kim will work closely together for an initial period, after which Dr. Kim will remain with the company as an advisor until his retirement in August.

Optimer board chairman McKinnell named CEO

The board of directors of Jersey City, N.J.-based Optimer Pharmaceuticals has appointed its chairman, Dr. Henry McKinnell, chief executive officer. McKinnell was Pfizer's CEO and chairman from 2001 to 2006 and was with Pfizer from 1971 until his retirement in 2007.

Intersect ENT raises $30M in Series D financing

Intersect ENT, a Menlo Park, Calif.-based innovator in treatment solutions for ear, nose and throat clinicians and their patients, has completed the initial closing of a $30 million Series D round of funding. The financing will be used to continue the rapid commercial expansion in the U.S. for the company's PROPEL and PROPEL mini sinus implants and to fund clinical studies of the company's latest product, an office-based treatment for chronic sinusitis sufferers.
