Biothera names chief medical officer

Biothera has named Patricia Molloy, M.D., chief medical officer. In this role, Molloy is responsible for the clinical development of Imprime PGG, the company’s immunotherapeutic oncology drug that is currently in multiple clinical trials for colorectal and lung cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Portola Pharmaceutials secures $89 million in financing

Portola Pharmaceuticals has raised $89 million in a preferred stock financing. The financing round included existing investors who were joined by Temasek, an Asia investment company, and Eastern Capital Limited. Proceeds will be used primarily to advance betrixaban, a once-daily, oral Factor Xa inhibitor, through phase III clinical development and to advance development of its companion product, PRT064445, a recombinant Factor Xa inhibitor antidote designed to reverse anticoagulant activity in patients treated with Factor Xa inhibitors suffering major bleeds or requiring surgery. Portola plans to initiate a phase III betrixaban program to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in acute medically ill patients in the first half of 2012.

Quanticate has named Dr. Daniel Chapple vice pesident of business development and marketing, effective immediately.  He will report to Quanticate's chairman and chief executive officer David Underwood and will be based out of Quanticate’s offices in the UK and Boston, MA. In his new role, Chapple will be responsible for working with the leadership team to further develop the Centralized Clinical Data Sciences solution which is focused on the importance of data to successfully gain approval and market new products through the use of technology coupled with highly skilled statisticians, programmers, data managers, medical writers and pharmacovigilance experts.

Agios raises $78 million in financing

Agios Pharmaceuticals has secured $78 million in an oversubscribed Series C financing. The proceeds of this financing will be used to advance the company's rapidly emerging portfolio of cancer metabolism therapeutics into the clinic and to expand research and development into inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs), a group of genetic disorders with high unmet medical need.

Allena Pharmaceuticals secures $15 million in Series A financing

Allena Pharmaceuticals, a company developing and commercializing innovative non-systemic oral protein therapeutics, has secured $15 million in Series A venture capital financing. Bessemer Venture Partners, Frazier Healthcare and Third Rock Ventures led the round. Proceeds from the financing will be used to accelerate the development of Allena's non-systemic protein therapeutics to treat metabolic and orphan diseases, with a particular focus on nephrologic and urologic conditions.

Avaxia raises $2.2 million in Series A financing

Avaxia Biologics, a privately-held biotech company, has completed its first close of $2.2 million of a Series A angel-led financing. Cherrystone Angels of Providence, Rhode Island led the round, with participation from Boston Harbor Angels and other undisclosed individuals. Mr. Robert Manning, the co-Chairman of Cherrystone Angels, will join the Avaxia board.
