Eye On: Leukemia

Leukemia is a form of cancer originating in white blood cells in the bone marrow and disseminated by the blood stream to lymph nodes, spleen, liver and other organs. As the bone marrow is infiltrated by large numbers of cancer cells, production of normally functioning white blood cells, as well as of red blood cells and platelets, is often impaired, resulting in susceptibility to infections, fatigue, bleeding, bruising and other symptoms. It can be characterized as chronic or acute, and by cell type, so that some of the main classifications are acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
