Charges Filed in Case of Fabricated Study Results

Charges were filed in the case of Scott Reuben, the U.S. anesthesiologist who allegedly fabricated clinical trial data for at least 21 published articles. Reuben, who wrote about pain management after surgery, was formerly chief of acute pain at Bay State Hospital in Springfield, Mass.

Although Reuben allegedly misrepresented himself and his research to numerous pharmaceutical companies, he faces only one count of healthcare fraud related specifically to a contract with Pfizer for a study on its Celebrex product.

According to court documents, Reuben published two articles on the results of a Celebrex study, based on fabricated patients and study results. Reuben faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
