The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a center devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention, has selected Oracle Health Sciences applications and Oracle technology as the foundation for an organization-wide analytics initiative designed to enable a new generation of personalized cancer treatment that improves outcomes. 

The platform will also support the center’s Moon Shots Program, an effort to dramatically accelerate the pace of converting scientific discoveries into clinical advances that reduce cancer deaths. Oracle applications and technology will power the enterprise analytics initiative, one of the program’s platforms. The new platform will bring together clinical, genomic, financial, administrative and operational information from internal and external sources to yield insights that drive care innovation and optimize operational efficiency.

“As we focus on the next-generation of treatments—including our Moon Shots Program—we require a powerful analytical infrastructure that can yield new insight from the unprecedented volume of data available today,” said Dr. John Frenzel, chief medical information officer, MD Anderson. “Oracle’s integrated health sciences applications, enterprise applications and technology stack will help provide one of the robust foundations that we need to accelerate deployment, and ultimately, discovery of life-saving treatments.”

To achieve its goals, MD Anderson will deploy a wide range of Oracle solutions, including Oracle Enterprise Healthcare Analytics. The center, which sees data growth of 30%-40% annually, is also deploying Oracle Database and Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition.

“Leveraging data and information to drive more effective resource utilization, improve operational efficiency and level patient volumes across the days of the week is becoming increasingly more important,” said Craig Owen, director of clinical analytics and informatics, MD Anderson. “Through the use of Oracle Enterprise Healthcare Analytics, we are creating the platform to improve delivery of actionable information to our customers so they can effectively improve processes.”
