The Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) has accredited 22 additional organizations. In total, AAHRPP has accredited 129 organizations, representing more than 550 entities. AAHRPP’s standards exceed federal regulations. Accreditations are announced quarterly, and are valid for three years.

"[AAHRPP] is on track to achieve its goal of accrediting the majority of academic health centers by 2010," the organization stated.

The following received full accreditation: The Atlanta VA Medical Center, Augusta Veterans Administration Medical Center; Emory University, Goodwyn Institutional Review Board, Harvard University, University Area Institutions, James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, Louis A. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Medical College of Georgia, Portland VA Medical Center, Providence VA Medical Center, Richard L. Roudebush VAMC, Schulman Associates Institutional Review Board, VA Western New York Healthcare System; University of Nebraska-Lincoln; VA Connecticut Healthcare System, VA Loma Linda Healthcare System and VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System, VA Long Beach Healthcare System, Veterans Affairs Medical Center—Asheville, West Virginia University, WV University of South Florida.

Thomas Jefferson University and VISN 20 Multi-Site Human Research Protection Program, in Portland, OR were granted qualified accreditation. Qualified accreditation status means that the organization meets most of the full standards. Any deficiencies are minor, few in number, and purely administrative. These deficiencies would not cause direct harm to patients.

"As more organizations attain accreditation, participants will be able to consider accreditation status when deciding whether to participate in a particular research study,” said AAHRPP president and chief executive offiecer, Marjorie A. Speers, Ph.D.
