AstraZeneca will demolish research labs in Delaware

Monday, April 25, 2011 01:30 PM

AstraZeneca will tear down three research laboratory buildings at its headquarters in Fairfax, Delaware, as part of its global restructuring, according to delaware online.

The three buildings are a major part of the company's Fairfax unit and house all of the research efforts. Moroever, it’s only about a decade old.

Last year, AstraZeneca announced it would end research into new psychiatric medicines and close its Delaware labs as part of a global restructuring.

As a result, about 550 Delaware-based researchers have lost their jobs, reducing the company's employment here to 3,500, from a high of 5,000. AstraZeneca's Delaware employment is at its lowest point since 2004.

Employees will move drugs through to late-stage development, but all Delaware research operations will end by the end of 2011.
