Trial Information

Randomized, bypass surgery study for symptomatic stroke or mini stroke from one or both blocked carotid artery(ies).

If you have suffered a stroke due to a blockage of one or both of your large artery(ies) running along the neck (the carotid artery), you may be eligible to participate in the Carotid Occlusion Surgery Study (COSS). This study is being conducted at Stanford Medical Center. The objective of this study is to test the theory that re-establishing blood flow to the brain can reduce subsequent ischemic stroke by 40% at two years.

To be eligible, you must be:

  • 18-85 years of age.
  • Have recent symptoms as a result of the stroke.
  • Have one or both of your neck artery (ies) (cartotid artery) completely blocked.
  • Able to read and understand the consent form and give consent.
