Trial Information
Stroke: Volunteers needed for stroke prevention research study.
Researchers with the Department of Neurology in the University
of Kentucky College of Medicine are conducting a study to determine
whether pioglitazone (Actos®), a medicine approved to treat
diabetes mellitus, will prevent a second stroke or heart attack by
reversing hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and
preventing blood vessel inflammation. This study will compare
pioglitazone to placebo (inactive substance) when added to current
medical practice for prevention of stroke and heart attack.
You may be eligible to participate in this study
if:
- You are a man or woman aged 45 years or older;
- You have had a stroke within the past six months;
- You have no history of diabetes mellitus; and
- You are willing to commit to a long-term research study of
stroke prevention that may last up to five years.
All study-related medical care and investigational drugs will be
provided at no charge for patients who participate in this research
trial.
