Trial Information

Stroke: Insulin resistance intervention after stroke (IRIS). Volunteers needed for stroke prevention research study.

Researchers with the Department of Neurology in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine are conducting a study to determine whether pioglitazone (Actos®), a medicine approved to treat diabetes mellitus, will prevent a second stroke or heart attack by reversing hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and preventing blood vessel inflammation. This study will compare pioglitazone to placebo (inactive substance) when added to current medical practice for prevention of stroke and heart attack.

You may be eligible to participate in this study if:

  • You are a man or woman aged 45 years or older;
  • You have had a stroke within the past 6 months;
  • You have no history of diabetes mellitus; and
  • You are willing to commit to a long-term research study of stroke prevention that may last up to 5 years.
