Islet After Kidney Transplantation (IAK) in Patient with Type 1 Diabetes Using a Sirolimus/Tacrolimus based Immunosuppressive Regimen

You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have type 1 diabetes and have received a successful kidney transplant for diabetic kidney disease. You have also been maintained under the care of your transplant doctors for at least three months on any combination of the following anti-rejection medications:  sirolimus, tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) or low-dose prednisone (5 mg per day or less) to prevent rejection of your kidney transplant.  One purpose of this study is to determine if islet transplantation is safe for subjects who have had a kidney transplant.  Another purpose is to see if having an islet transplant will allow subjects to stop taking insulin shots.  Also the study doctors want to find out whether or not an islet transplant improves blood sugar control, makes kidney transplants work better and/or improves quality of life.  If you agree to be a subject in this research study, your participation for active treatment and monitoring is expected to last 24 months.  Your medical condition will continue to be followed for the rest of your life.
