MDA 2009-0288 Randomized Pilot Study of Oncologist Recommended Home-Based Exercise Program Versus Relaxation Training for Physical Functioning and Symptom Control in Patients With Unresectable Stage IV or Recurrent Colon Cancer

To evaluate the study feasibility of an oncologist recommended home-based exercise program vs relaxation training for physical functioning and symptom control, in terms of recruitment rate, patient retention, patient adherence to behavioral recommendations, and program and assessment implementation, in patients with stage IV or recurrent colon cancer.

To estimate the self-reported effect size of the exercise intervention on physical functioning in these patients

Patient Inclusion Criteria:

  • Diagnosis of colon cancer
  • Stage IV or recurrent disease
  • Unresectable disease

Patient Exclusion Criteria:

  • Not exercising at a moderate-vigorous intensity for ≥ 150 minutes per week or at a vigorous intensity for > 20 minutes on ≥ 3 days per week
  • No symptomatic bone metastase
