Trial Information

Reducing Extremity Lymphedema through Axillary Lymphatic Preservation Surgery

PILOT PHASE
You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have breast cancer and have been identified as a patient who will undergo a surgical procedure including a planned removal of the lymph nodes from underneath the arm (axillary lymph node dissection) for breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to test surgeons’ ability to utilize a new surgical technique by using a blue dye to try and identify arm related nodes during the removal of underarm lymph nodes for breast cancer. This study will also help determine whether nodes identified in this fashion can also contain cancer. Your participation on this study is expected to last 2 years after your surgery.

RANDOMIZED PHASE
You have been asked to participate in this research study because you have breast cancer and have been identified as a patient who will undergo a surgical procedure including a planned removal of the lymph nodes from underneath the arm (axillary lymph node dissection) for breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of axillary reverse mapping (a method of identifying lymph nodes related to the arm) as a way to guide axillary lymph node dissection (the surgical removal of underarm lymph nodes) for breast cancer. We hope to determine whether this addition to the standard surgery will reduce the number of patients affected by lymphedema associated with the procedure and result in improved quality of life, while still having control of any cancer spread in the underarm area that would be provided by the standard procedure. Your participation on this study is expected to last 2 years after your surgery.
