Correlations Amongst Sympathetic Arousals, Cortical Arousals, and Quality of Sleep

The reason for doing this study is to learn whether low levels of activity in a part of the body called the sympathetic nervous system means good sleep is occurring and high levels of activity mean poor sleep is occurring. The sympathetic nervous system is a part of the body that controls many things that go on in the body that we cannot control. For example, you can decide to move your arm, but you cannot sit still and make your heart beat faster or slower or make your blood pressure go up or down or make yourself sweat or stop sweating.

The level of activity of the sympathetic nervous system can be measured using a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved device called the Watch-Pat. It is produced by the company, Itamar, and by placing a small plastic cap at the end of your finger, it can detect the increases in activity and decreases of activity of the sympathetic nervous system. With this study, we are trying to find out if more activity of the sympathetic nervous system in sleep means the person is sleeping poorly and less activity means they are sleeping well. Your sleep will be evaluated by asking you how you slept and by the measurements taken during the study.
