Trial Information

A Randomized, Phase II Study, Assessing Axitinib as Pre-Surgical Therapy in Patients with High Risk Prostate Cancer

You are being asked to take part in this study because you have prostate cancer that, based on certain characteristics, has a high risk of progressing further. Also you have been identified as a candidate for prostatectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection (removal of the prostate and the associated pelvic lymph node tissue). The primary objective of this study is to determine if axitinib changes the environment surrounding the tumor in research participants with high-risk prostate cancer. With respect to the environment surrounding the tumor, we will be looking at an entity calling the “pre-metastatic niche”, which may represent an area to which cancer cells are attracted. Researchers will take blood and tumor specimens to look for biological characteristics associated with response to treatment so that researchers may be able to predict which cancer patients may benefit from this therapy in the future. Your participation in this study is expected to last for as long as your disease does not worsen and you are not experiencing any unmanageable side effects. After your treatment on this study is over, your medical condition will continue to be followed every three months until it is noted that your PSA (a laboratory used to follow your prostate cancer) rises to a certain level (in this case, ≥ 0.2) or until you begin another therapy to treat your prostate cancer.
