COG AALL0932: Treatment of Patients with Newly Diagnosed Standard Risk B-Precursor Acute Lymhoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

This study is called a clinical trial. A clinical trial is a research study involving treatment of a disease in human patients. This study is organized by Children’s Oncology Group (COG).COGis an international research group that conducts clinical trials for children with cancer. More than 200 hospitals in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe are members ofCOG.

You are being asked to take part in this research study because you have been diagnosed with Standard Risk B Lymphoblastic Leukemia (SR B-ALL), none, or only a few leukemia cells were found in your spinal fluid at diagnosis, and (for boys) the testes were not enlarged.

B Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL)is a cancer of the blood cells that occurs in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the soft tissue in the center of the bones where blood cells are made. B-ALL is a cancer in which young, abnormal, infection-fighting white blood cells, called ‘blasts’, crowd out normal bone marrow cells and spread into the blood stream. Blasts can also spread to the brain, spinal cord, testicles, and other organs. You have leukemia that is classified as Standard Risk (SR) because your white blood cell count is less than 50 000/microliters and you are at least 1 year old and less than 10 years old. The term risk refers to the chance of the cancer coming back after treatment.

It is common to enroll children and adolescents with cancer in a clinical trial that seeks to improve cancer treatment over time. Clinical trials include only people who choose to take part. You have a choice between the standard treatments for SR B-ALL and this clinical trial.

Please take your time to make your decision. Discuss it with your friends and family. We encourage you to include your child in the discussion and decision to the extent that she or he is able to understand and take part.
