LEADER, Liraglutide Effect and Action in Diabetes: Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcome Results. A long-term, multi-center, international, randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine liraglutide effects on cardiovascular events

This is a study evaluating a drug currently approved by the FDA. The drug liraglutide will be tested on people with a cardiovascular past and will assess cardiovascular outcomes, weight, and glycemic control and other various factors.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Men or women- 2 diabetes
  • 50 years or older
  • Have previous cardiovascular problems including cerebrovascular, cardiovascular or peripheral vascular disease, chronic renal failure, chronic heart failure, heart attack, stroke, or stenosis
  • Are naïve to diabetes drugs or currently are on a stable dose of orals or long acting insulin such as; lantus, detemir, NPH
  • HgA1c of 7.0 or greater

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Cancer in the last 5 years
  • Currently taking short-acting insulin
