Trial Information

A Phase III, multicentre, international, randomised, parallel group, double blind cardiovascular safety study of BI 10773 (10 mg and 25 mg administered orally once daily) compared to usual care in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with increased cardiovascular risk.

This study is for patients diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus who have a history of cardiovascular (heart) disease. This trial is being conducted in 40 different countries. There are 20 office visits. The duration of this trial is 3 to 4 years. Subjects will receive a patient stipend between $50 and $75 for each completed visit.

Patient Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age 18 or older
  • Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
  • History of myocardial infarction, unstable angina, Multivessel Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), Multivessel Coronary Artery By-pass Grafting (CABG), ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke or peripheral occlusive arterial disease
  • HbA1c = 7.0% and = 10.0%
  • BMI = 45 kg/m2

Patient Exclusion Criteria:

  • Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
  • Current treatment with systemic steroids
  • Alcohol or drug abuse within the last 3 months
  • Medical history of Cancer, except basal cell carcinoma, within the last 5 years
