Research Study Summary

Effect of Vitamin D Repletion on Insulin Resistance and Systematic Inflammation

Purpose

Doctors at Albert Einstein College of Medicine are seeking overweight men and women 21-60 years old, who are otherwise healthy, to participate in a medical research study to see if treatment with Vitamin D may reduce the risk of diabetes. Free diabetes testing and medical screening will be provided.

Patient Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age 21-60 yr
  • Serum 25(OH)D <20 ng/ml
  • Insulin resistant based on HOMA-IR score of >3
  • Able and willing to provide informed consent
  • BMI 27-35

Patient Exclusion Criteria:

  • FPG ≥ 126 mg/dl or 2-hour-OGTT plasma glucose ≥ 200 mg/dl
  • Major psychiatric disorder on medication (excluding successfully treated depression)
  • Diagnosed diabetes mellitus
  • HIV/AIDS
  • History of any cancer
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Alcohol or substance abuse
  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • Primary hyperparathyroidism
  • Nephrolithiasis
  • Pregnancy or breast-feeding
  • Regular visits to a tanning salon
  • Hypercalcemia or hypocalcemia
  • Untreated or uncontrolled hypertension
  • Any Chronic illness requiring medication, other than arthritis, hypertension and hyperlidemia
