Department of Radiology seeks Volunteers ages 16-70 with Acute Venous Thrombosis for research study.

UVa Health System, Department of Radiology, seeks Volunteers ages 16-70 with Acute Venous Thrombosis (DVT), or blood clots, for a research study.

The purpose of the study is to see if the use of a clot-busting drug directed inside of the clot, along with blood thinners, improves quality of life in patients with DVT with acceptable safety and cost. The most common treatment for DVT uses anticoagulant drugs (blood thinners), such as heparin and warfarin, to stop the clot from growing within the vein. People in this study will have their DVT treated by one of the two methods described above. Study involves blood draws, possibly an extra ultrasound, measurement of your leg with a tape measure, research questionnaire, your time in the hospital while you are being treated for your DVT, and follow up visits to clinic for a total of 24 months (2 years). You will have clinic visits at 10 days, 1, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after you are randomized in the study. Each follow up visit will last about an hour.
You will be compensated up to a total of $100 for your participation in this study and in completing the research questionnaires ($20 for each questionnaire starting at 1 month follow-up). You should get your payment about 30 days after each visit. The income may be reported to the IRS as income.
